Some doves made a nest 3 days ago in my door wreath. I want to move the wreath, without disturbing the nest and eggs to a door parallel to the one it's in now. But, I don't want to cause the parents to abandon the unhatched eggs. If I move it, will they abandon the nest? Presently, every time I open the door, the one on nesting duty flies around until I close the door.

Not an expert, but did work at a bird rescue for a few years. I know that the old story that birds will abandon babies who fall out of their nest is false. So I *suspect* that the birds will be okay IF they feel the new location is as safe and protected as the original. They chose it not for the cute wreath but for the warmth, protection from wind and predators, etc.

Did they pick a door you use a lot (phrase bird brain comes to mind laugh
duh ) The eggs should hatch and babies fledge in the next month if you can wait. (But totally get that might be highly inconvenient for you and dangerous for the nest!)

Good luck! If you have to move it, well doves are not an endangered species, so 🤷‍♀️.

We had black birds nest in one off our trees higggghhhh up. Two babies fell but were alive. Too far even w a ladder to put back. We nailed a nest (small plastic bucket with grass, twigs, paper, etc.) and a perch for momma as far up as possible. They claimed our nest and for what we could determine…. Babies were fine.

I think you could safely relocate the nest.

@ BB, I live in an apartment and it's the only door. So every time I go out, I scare the mom or dad doing nesting duty. I'm thinking of mounting a post on the wall next to my door and just moving it a few feet so they see it. It will mess with my decor, but im excited to see the babies hatch.

@ AnnieOakley, yes, im excited to see the birds hatch and grow. Im even tempted to buy some mealy worms when they do and leave them out for mom and dad to feed them laugh

I'm definitely not a bird expert. There's a subreddit called StupidDoveNests. It's filled with bird nests, both dove's and others, built in awkward places. Maybe doves are known for building nests in weird places. We have a pair that visit under our bird feeders, but I've never seen their nests.

Around here, wrens build nests in awkward spots. We were remodeling before we moved in, and the wrens had a nest in the front porch light. My husband wanted to change out the light and built a platform next to it and put the nest in there. They seemed fine with it and even used it another season.

I read that the male wren builds several proto-nests, then the female picks a nest which they finish together and use. Now if I see their nest somewhere awkward, I destroy it if it doesn't have eggs in it. We have a cat that would destroy any nest it could reach, so I reason that I'm doing the birds a favor. This year a wren built a nest in our grill cover that we had left off overnight. It was sad seeing the wren gather up it's nesting material and carrying it off after I scattered the nest on the deck. I think it still nested close by, maybe under the deck, because I keep seeing it get mealworms from the feeder and carrying them down there.
